It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
So the NBA Playoffs start tomorrow. For me, this is Christmas and like a month of Jordan releases together. 4 games tomorrow, 4 more Sunday. And some of these matchups are really going to be interesting. Oklahoma City and Dallas I think is going to go 7. And don't be surprised if Dallas takes them out. This will be the Thunder's first time going into the playoffs expected to go deep. If it's 2-2 after 4 games, I think Westbrook and Durant will start to feel that pressure. Expectations can be a 1200 lb. gorilla. The other 1st round series I'm really looking forward to is Heat-Knicks. Flashback for a sec to the 1999 season. It was shortened by a lockout and the Heat's first-round opponent was......the Knicks. The Knicks had barely gotten into the playoffs and the Heat were favored by many to win the East. For those that don't remember, the Knicks won the series and ended up going to the Finals that year. Not saying it's going to happen again, but just found it ironic. Somewhere there is a LeBron hater hoping it happens so that it will justify their claims that he's a fraud. He's not a fraud. He should be MVP again. Hands down. I'm almost hesitant to make predictions because it's so tough to predict this year. I could stick to my pick from the beginning of the season: OKC vs. Miami. But you can't discount the Spurs, Lakers, or Bulls. One of those 5 teams will be the next NBA champion. It's really going to be about which superstar (LeBron,Wade, Durant, Westbrook, Parker, Kobe, or Rose) says "this is my ring". I can't wait to see it.

What's Wrong With The Heat?
So the Heat got beat by Boston by 19 points yesterday. Rondo had a triple-double. The Heat scored just 72 points. They went 10-7 in March. What's wrong with them? Nothing. They are the exact same team that went to the NBA Finals. I think people think that just because you take 2 of the top 5 players in the world and put them on the floor together it's a guaranteed ring. If that was the case there wouldn't be a lot of NBA champions. Let's face the facts, LeBron James may just be the best player in the NBA, regardless of how you feel about his "Decision" or late game miscues. Dwyane Wade is one of the best players in the league that doesn't get the shine he deserves because he plays with LeBron. Chris Bosh is an all-star at power forward and a gold medalist. Put those 3 together, championship, right? They lost in the NBA Finals for one reason. It's the one thing they're missing: chemistry. If you watch enough Heat basketball (and I do, they are spectacular at times), their offense is quite predictable. LeBron or Wade will penetrate and shoot or kick out for a 3, or Bosh will post up. Not quite the triangle. Good defensive teams (Chicago, L.A. Lakers, Boston) will find ways to make life difficult for the Big 3. All that said, I still think this team is too talented for Chicago to overtake them in the East at playoff time. I just don't know if they have what it takes to win it all in their current form. You look at Dallas last year, they always seemed to have someone ready to step up aside from Dirk. Even the Lakers recent title teams, guys like Artest, Ariza, Fisher, and Gasol came up big in crucial moments. Who is going to step up for Miami and be that consistent 10-15 a game scorer aside from the Big 3?

What if Michael Jordan never came back?
March is a historic month in basketball history. Everyone remembers March 2, 1962 for Wilt Chamberlain scoring 100 points. But what if I told you a 19 point game where a guy shot 7-28 was possibly the most important basketball game in the last 20 years? You'd probably think I'd lost my mind. But on March 19th, 1995, 17 years ago today, Michael Jordan suited up for an NBA game for the first time since Game 6 of the 1993 NBA Finals. That comeback influenced so much of what we have today. But what if it hadn't happened? It's quite possible that Shaq and Penny would have eventually become what Shaq and Kobe became in LA, at least the champions part. Remember it was the Magic in 1995 who knocked the Bulls out of the playoffs and drove Jordan to get back in shape and lead the Bulls to a sweep of the Magic on the way to the title in 1996. That sweep led Shaquille O'Neal to sign with the Lakers that summer. That summer also saw the Lakers make a deal that would give them the draft rights to a young player who went to the NBA straight from high school large part because he wanted to play against Jordan. That player's name was Kobe Bryant. And that Laker dynasty that Shaq and Kobe helped orchestrate? It was coached by Phil Jackson. Would Phil have 11 rings if Michael Jordan never came back? Probably not. We can even look at our shoes. When MJ retired, the basketball shoe game hit a bit of a lull. Jordans were still cool, but something about seeing Mike do work in them took our desire for them to the next level. So March 19th, 1995, Michael Jordan came back and the impact of that is still being felt even today. As a huge Jordan fan and in the vein of his 2 word fax that announced his comeback, I'll close with this: THANK GOD!

NBA Trade Deadline Review
I'm not going to go into detail on every trade that took place at the deadline, because there weren't any of the blockbusters that have been discussed all year. One thing we learned is that a man can change his mind as much as a woman does about the position of the couch when your arms are tired from moving it. He stayed in Orlando, which I think was the best move for him. Going to New Jersey he would have been in a bigger market but on a team that probably will never go further than the conference semis at best. San Antonio got Stephen Jackson back, remember him from their '03 title run? Good move, but there will be no 2012 title run for San Antonio. The Clippers got Nick Young, but they still are the 2nd best team in LA based on the fact that they lost to Phoenix at home this week with Steve Nash and Grant Hill on the bench. Biggest winners in my mind at the deadline are the Lakers. They addressed their point guard situation and improved their size off the bench. They now have to be considered a threat in the West again. The Eastern Conference teams didn't do much at the deadline, except for the Nets getting Gerald Wallace during the Portland fire sale. In the spirit of March Madness, your NBA Final Four will be Los Angeles (Lakers) vs. OKC and Miami vs. Chicago. I'm out like Mizzou in the tourney (sorry Robby).

Is Gerald Wallace Really Loved This Much?
As the NBA trading deadline came to a close yesterday, there were some moves that shouldn't go unmentioned.
This is one of those moves that should never make a child cry. I mean, really, little girls should only cry when they fall down and mess up their face or when their big brother pulls the head off of her favorite Barbie doll. But, the good out of this is that we have a young lady who is a hardcore sports fan. Check it...

Her Luke Walton reaction was just like mine. I'll give her that. I just wish her Derrick Fisher reaction was a little more emphatic. Does anybody else really care though..... I'll wait.

South Carolina has called for a press conference this afternoon where they will be firing Head Men's Basketball Coach Darrin Horn.

The Announcement
I remember the Lakers announcing something to the effect of Magic having the flu and that he wouldn't be playing in the first few games of the '91-'92 season. Then came November 7th, 1991. I was in the 8th grade and my boy Derick Valentine called me on the phone and told me that Magic Johnson had AIDS and had retired. This was before Twitter and Facebook and texting so we didn't find out until hours after the announcement. And as a society we really didn't know what AIDS was. Sure enough, a few minutes later I remember seeing on NBC Nightly News that Magic Johnson had retired. In my mind at the time, Magic was going to be dead in 5 years based on what we did know about HIV/AIDS. I was stunned. Despite my love for the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan, how could you not like Magic Johnson? Before the explosion of Jordan, which wouldn't have happened had it not been for Magic and Bird bringing fans and viewers back to the NBA, you were either with the Lakers or the Celtics. Up to this point, this didn't happen to famous people. Surely not one of the greatest basketball players ever. But this changed everything. Magic was now playing point in the game to educate the world about HIV/AIDS. And 20 years later, he's still here. No one will ever forget the '92 All-Star Game where he showed that he's not dead. That smile is still as magnetic as ever. His influence is felt not just in basketball but in the business world. Magic was a winner on the court, but even if AIDS eventually takes his life, he's beaten it. He didn't run from it, he took it head on. What an example.

The Hangover
This is not a post about what happens when you have too much to drink. This is about the only analogy I could think of for some of the craziness of the NBA this week. It started on Sunday. The Knicks, who are beginning to come down to earth after all the Linsanity (I'm still getting the shirt only because it's awesome), lost to the Boston Celtics. The Celtics, who have been almost in a hungover state since Danny Ainge gave away Kendrick Perkins, used the momentum from that great win to..........go to Philadelphia and lose by 33 points? Wow. 2nd game of the Sunday doubleheader was the Lakers versus the Heat. The Lakers have been the epitome of inconsistency this year were playing against the team that is my pick to win it all. The Lakers got a vintage pre-Palace brawl, pre-name change performance from Metta World Peace (ok, Ron Artest). The Lakers won the game. They used this momentum to....

Change is hard sometimes. Today I am going to help you change your team by clearing out some room for that guy on the waiver that you need. It is one of my biggest problems in fantasy because I can never pull the trigger and drop a guy even though he is obviously struggling. It is so easy to think that as soon as you drop the guy that is when he starts playing better but it is hardly ever the truth. Instead the player just sits on your bench for weeks just taking up priceless bench space. Just do it dammit. Drop the bastard. I'm not saying that I am Jesus but here are the guys that give you "permission to drop".

Stop the presses, they done gave him a blog
So Robby hit me up and asked me to blog about the NBA. But what qualifications, you may ask, does a 5'10", 210 lb. dude that averaged about 1.3 ppg in the last league that he played in, have to blog about the NBA? I asked myself this as I watched Pacers-Bulls on my phone while on the treadmill. I mean, my best basketball moves these days take place on NBA 2K12 in MyPlayer mode. But I know my hoops. I could probably tell you every NBA champion from 1978 on (good chance it was Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Pistons, or Spurs, all of them won multiple titles during that time span). One time we were sitting at BW3's and an old draft came on and the Nuggets came up, they were like "J, who they draft", I correctly said Mark Macon. Why I remembered that, I don't know, but I did. Bottom line is, I do my homework. I'm the dude that watches NBAtv in the morning to keep up with the time. If I say it happened in the NBA, it happened. I'm that dude that had to correct Nike when they said Michael Jordan was wearing the Air Jordan III when he hit "The Shot" against Cleveland in 1989. So I know my stuff. I'm not just some casual fan. When it comes to NBA, I was born to blog. Play, not so much but I can still stick a jumper occasionally.
So the Lakers beat the Heat yesterday. So? It was two of the NBA's marquee teams. So? Kobe beat LeBron. So? And believe me, I am wearing a Kobe shirt as I write this. The point I'm making is this: a marquee matchup does not equate to a rivalry. What are Kobe and LeBron battling for? They won't have to go through each other to get to the Finals? And neither the Lakers or Heat are a lock to get there, although the Heat are more likely to than the Lakers. When I think of rivalries, I think Lakers-Celtics, Celtics-76ers, Bulls-Pistons (have every game from their battles in the '89, '90, and '91 Playoffs on DVD), Bulls-Knicks, Pacers-Knicks, Lakers-Kings. But J, it was the two best players in the world? True dat, but I'm old school. You don't develop into rivals unless you are battling for everything or a chance at it in my opinion. Last I checked, Miami and the Lakers weren't playing for a conference title yesterday and an automatic NCAA bid. Good win for the Lakers, still. But like LeBron said after the NBA Finals, they still wake up the next day with the same problems, that problem being the fact that Derek Fisher is still their starting point guard. Enough for now. I'm out like an anchor on dry land in "The Hangover 2".

Now for the Fantasy!!!!
Since it is basketball season I will focus on that but baseball is around the corner. Speaking of that if your interested I have a free league that still has openings just follow the link.
http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/register/tos?league_id=31097&password=billymadison
Sign up, make a team, prepare to lose. Automatic draft that will be performed whenever the league fills.
Players Under 25% to Get
Linas Kleiza (SG,SF) - Toronto - 14%
I know what your saying. Who the hell is this guy? I have been promoting this guy for weeks though and is always a good fill in or a borderline utility player. Over the last two weeks this guy is averaging around 15 pts and 3.5 rebounds in an average of only twenty three minutes. I'm telling you right now if James Johnson goes down for any reason this guy will set the league on fire.
Steve Novak (SF,PF) - New York - 23%
He strokes it (3-pointer) more often than a fifteen year old with a new internet connection. If you need a fill in he is averaging 4 3-pointers, 1 rebound, .5 steal over the last two weeks. Novak is stuck on a team with what could be 10 NBA starters and if one goes down for a period of time he could stroke it even more.
Marco Belinelli (SG) - New Orleans - 24%
This may be my new favorite guy in the league and as long as no one in my league reads this he is my next pick up if one of my guys goes down with an injury. Belinelli game averages around 15 pts (1.6 3's), 4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in the last two weeks. GO GET HIM NOW.
Randoms
-Raymond Felton gets the start on March 5th so all you Jamal Crawford owners be warned. I see this as very surprising because Crawford has been on fire. Here is my take though. It is rumored that the Lakers want Felton and this may just be a ploy to get him on the court and show the Lakers he is worth the money. It looks like Steve Blake may come to Portland if Felton goes to the Lakers. Blake is a nice fit in Portland and is another guy who can put down a couple threes a game.
-Andrea Bargnani should be back this week. I have been holding onto him in my league for weeks now and lets hope that it pays off for all those owners who waited on this big man that can not only put up rebounds and blocks but pours on the points and can shoot from downtown.
-Manu Ginobli played last night and looked decent. Only played 23 minutes but should see more time. If he is available grab him and stash him for playoffs if you have room on your bench.
-C.J. Watson came up with an obvious limp last night and may provide just the spark Richard Hamilton needs to start putting up numbers for the Bulls.
SQUIDS FANTASY PROMISE
I am going to try and put one of these up in every article as well. If you are a betting person then feel free to just scroll down to this part if the rest bores you. Tonight the Clippers go to Minnesota and they are giving the Timberwolves 3 points. Take this bet guys I'm telling you now.

- Kevin Love is a Beast
- Beasley (Big 12 represent) has turned on.
-Kevin Love is a Manimal
-Derrick Williams is finally showing his promise.
-Kevin Love is scary, seriously. Unless the Clips turn it on from beyond the arc Timberwolves not only cover the points but win the game.
